Swerl is a micro roastery that blends the art of exceptional coffee with a strong sense of community. Founded in 2019 by Beatriz, a sommelier, and Daniel, an aircraft technician, the company emerged from their exploration of New Zealand and their unexpected discovery of specialty coffee. This newfound passion led them to establish Swerl in a 1972 Mercedes bus on the beaches of Falkenberg, Sweden, during the summer of 2019. They initially served coffee from top Swedish roasters, focusing on quality and traceability.

During the winter of 2019/2020, Beatriz and Daniel relocated to Lisbon, Portugal, where they deepened their knowledge of specialty coffee by working with Buna and Nomad Coffee. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to return to Falkenberg uncertain about Swerl's future.

Despite the challenges, Swerl continued to thrive as a summer-only rolling coffee bar, expanding from a two-person team to a five-member crew by 2020. In 2021, their dream of roasting their own coffee came to fruition with the purchase of a 15 kg Giesen roasting machine. Leveraging Daniel's technical expertise, they spent a year perfecting their roasting techniques.

By early 2022, Swerl had launched its own roastery with new branding created in collaboration with designer Andreas Pedersen. This transition allowed them greater control over the entire coffee production process, enabling them to focus on creating a traceable and high-quality product. They work closely with passionate coffee producers, following the coffee seasons to ensure vibrant and delicious offerings. Swerl has also developed stringent protocols for sourcing, sampling, and quality control to maintain consistency and excellence.

In 2023, Swerl moved into a larger roasting atelier, which enhanced their workflow and allowed for the acquisition of advanced equipment like color sorters. This new space supports their goal of continuously improving their product.

Today, Swerl’s coffee is enjoyed in coffee shops worldwide. The team remains committed to improving and sharing their seasonal, high-quality coffee, driven by their dedication to the craft and the community they serve.
