Cooperative Chernyi were pioneers in the specialty coffee field. They initiated the project in 2013 as a worker cooperative with principles of horizontal management and the naive idea of making the world better and fairer through involvement in the coffee chain and creating new trends in business. Starting with a capital of 500 thousand rubles and limited experience in working with coffee, they brewed specialty coffee at urban festivals, opened a coffee corner in a bookshop, and operated a mobile bike café.
From 2014 onwards, they began roasting and selecting coffee themselves. In 2017, they crowdfunded the translation of James Hoffmann's "The World Atlas of Coffee" into Russian, and subsequently, they were involved in publishing several other significant coffee-related books.
In 2018, they inaugurated a large café in Lyalin Lane, their only café in Moscow at the moment. They launched an online store, began selling coffee wholesale, and established their own roasting facility with a Diedrich roaster at the CTI Fabrika premises. In 2019, they ventured to Ethiopia for the first time, followed by Guatemala, where they forged direct, long-term relationships with farmers, later adding farmers from Colombia. They consistently brew and roast rare batches, typically only available at barista championships, from farms such as Gesha Village, La Negritta, Ninety Plus, and auctions.
Coffee has always been intertwined with the people who grow, produce, roast, brew, and drink it – the lives of thousands revolve around it. Their project has thrived thanks to the support of their community. They support human rights organizations and NGOs aiding people with experiences of homelessness, refugees, migrants, women who have endured violence, and women in correctional facilities. They also maintain connections with the cycling, literary, and art communities, regularly organizing joint events. They believe that coffee can be more than just a cup; it can be a tool for changing the world around us, especially when it's extraordinary coffee.
